Dental Scaling and Cleaning
Also known as oral prophylaxis, it is the removal of plaque and tartar build up on the teeth.
Plaque is a sticky colourless substance that is naturally formed on the teeth and along the gumline by a combination of food bacteria and saliva. Plaque can cause tooth decay and gum disease.
Tartar is plaque that has calcified or hardened on the teeth, a tartar can only be removed by a dental hygienist a dental hygienist.
Once plaque and tartar have formed it can irritate the gum tissue causing them to become red, inflamed and irritated. This is referred to as gingivitis. If left untreated gingivitis can result in irreversible periodontal disease.
X-rays are a tool Dr. Goldstein uses to aid in determining tooth decay, tooth and bone abnormalities, bone loss and pathological problems.
At our office we use digital imaging, which greatly reduces radiation exposure compared to traditional film x-rays by up to 90%.
There are many other advantages to digital x-rays.
