5 Surprising Myths About Dental Implants

Dentist explaining dental implant model to female patient

The internet can be a great resource for learning about new things, but you have to know who to trust. There is a lot of misinformation out there! This is true even when it comes to dental implants and other tooth replacement options. Are you missing teeth and considering implant treatment? Keep reading to learn the truth behind five common dental implant myths.

Myth #1: Dental Implants Are Only for Older People

It’s true that older people are more likely to experience tooth loss. However, dental implants can be an ideal treatment option for almost any adult missing a tooth. One important caveat is that your jawbone must be fully developed before undergoing implant treatment. For most people, this development is complete by their early twenties. In addition, you must have good oral health overall before you can get implants.

Myth #2: Dental Implants Are Noticeable

Modern dental implants can blend in seamlessly with natural teeth. Because implants integrate directly with the jawbone, your replacement teeth will never slip or shift when eating or speaking. In addition, the crown, bridge, or denture attached to your implant will be custom-crafted to match the shape, size, and color of your surrounding smile. The only way others will know you have dental implants is if you tell them.

Myth #3: Dental Implants Are Painful

While getting dental implants does involve surgery, your dentist or oral surgeon will first numb the affected area with a local anesthetic. During the surgery, you may feel some pressure, but your teeth and gums won’t feel any pain. You may experience some mild discomfort during the recovery period. This is completely normal and can be managed by taking prescription or over-the-counter medication as directed by your dentist.

Myth #4: Implants Require Food Restrictions

After you have your implants placed, you will need to stick to eating soft foods for a few days or weeks. However, once your implants have healed and completely fused with the jawbone, you will once again be able to enjoy all your favorite foods. Dental implants are the only tooth replacement solution that can restore up to 90% of your natural bite force.

Myth #5: Dental Implants Are Expensive

While dental implants may cost more upfront than other options, they usually are the smart choice in the long run. With proper care, you can expect your dental implants to last for several decades or even the rest of your life! Traditional bridges and dentures, meanwhile, must be replaced every five to 15 years. Dental implants’ longevity and other benefits make them a wise long-term investment.
